Position Summary

Full-Time
Day Shift

Assists Director in managing the functions and activities relating to respiratory services to patients of all ages.

Essential Functions and Job Duties:

  • Functions under CRT or RRT job description providing daily patient care.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of respiratory procedures and standards; performs role according to policies and procedures.
    • Performs technical skills, patient care tasks, and monitoring; records and communicates data.
    • Recognizes and documents condition changes.
    • Participates in evaluation activities to assure appropriate patient care is provided and to improve patient care.
  • The following roles will be designated:
    • Day shift coordinator
    • Night shift coordinator
    • Education coordinator

Required Skills

The following tasks will be shared between coordinators

  • Coordinates Staff Scheduling and Daily Workload
    • Responsible for the scheduling of current staff to ensure adequate coverage on all shifts per department staffing guidelines.
    • Establishes service priorities, work routines, and work flow patterns
    • Mediates staff problems relating to work duties, morale, scheduling, procedures, and other basic needs. Refers unsolved problems to Director.
    • Monitors workload and calls in additional help as directed by staffing guidelines.
  • Staff Development
    • Oversees the orientation of new employees.
    • Provides leadership in development of staff through in services and education.
    • Coordinates educational efforts between Respiratory Care Department and other departments.
    • Assists in training in use of new equipment.
    • Acts as Site Supervisor for BAT and Drug Testing Program.
    • Trains staff in EPIC documentation and charging practices.
    • Organizes and conducts annual competency testing for respiratory therapists and nurses; provides educational in services on new treatments, procedures, equipment, etc.
  • Clinical Site Coordination
    • Coordinates educational activities with Parkland College and other educational institutions whose students use DMH as a clinical site.
  • Quality Assurance Activities
    • Participates in planning the services of the department; assists in developing goals and objectives in consultation with the Director. Recommends short and long term goals.  Analyzes respiratory standards for adequacy of quality care; revises standards to improve quality.  Organizes and maintains an effective CQI plan.
    • Participates in the development of new special procedures as requested by the Medical Director.
    • Participates with CQI projects through problem identification.
  • Participates in staff performance evaluations.
    • Participates in personal and professional growth by continuing education, seminars, staff meetings, and in services. Advises staff regarding educational opportunities.
    • Contributes to staff performance evaluations with objective and subjective data surrounding the 4 pillars.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • Must be knowledgeable in all areas of respiratory care.  Must be able to use computers and other equipment.  Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.

Education and/or Other Requirements

Must be a graduate of an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program.  Must be a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) under the National Board of Respiratory Care.  Must have current CPR instructor card.  Prefer advanced credentials (i.e. RRT-NPS, RRT-ACCS)

Job duties involve the potential for frequent exposure to blood and body fluids.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, kneel and assist in lifting patients; able to assist patients and/or adjust equipment at floor level. Must be able to support persons (possibly 200 pounds or more) in emergency situations.  Must be able to move quickly from place to place on occasion, including from floor to floor in emergency situations.  Must be able to hear to take blood pressure and to hear breath sounds.

  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.
