  • Registers patients, enters test orders, cancels, credits, charges, and merges according to physicians’ orders or established laboratory procedures.
  • Registers, orders and delivers specimens brought in to department.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in a safe, sanitary and well-stocked condition; performs other assigned duties.
    • Performs storeroom duties.
    • Greets, informs, and directs visitors; answers inquiries concerning laboratory services for patients and families.
    • Prints and ascertains that reports are sent as needed.
  • Performs follow-up duties.
    • Sorts, files and/or routes reports and messages.
    • Maintains files, procedures and logs.
  • Assists in training new or less-skilled personnel; participates in continuing education.
  • Communicates and interacts well with co-workers.

  • Answers main department phone number.  Routes calls and takes messages as necessary.
  • Orders and receives pathology specimens when Histology is closed.

  • Contacts outside providers with critical values and questions about out-patient orders.
  • Explains to patients how to collect samples.  Provides containers and instructions to patients.
  • Tracks and follows up on incomplete and verbal orders.
  • Contacts phlebotomists on the floor about stat draw requests when Phlebotomy Manager is busy.
  • Complete laboratory work queues.

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Essential Functions and Job Duties

  • Performs all duties of an MRI technologist as required in a timely manner.  Demonstrates competence and proficiency.  Identifies anatomical orientation on all required images and ensures proper film identification on all images and reviews each examination for technical accuracy, presents completed examination to radiologist. 
  • Performs all required examinations.
  • Positions the patient and equipment.
  • Utilizes sterile techniques to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Selects proper format and technique.
  • Arranges required procedural accessories.
  • Utilizes all required diagnostic equipment to produce scans of diagnostic quality.
  • Performs volume of MRI procedures in a timely manner based on a departmental average.

  • Maintains National and Illinois certification and attends in-services and educational programs to stay abreast of developing trends in the field of MRI.
  • Coordinates MRI exams with other sections of Radiology to ensure the quality and continuity of patient care.  Performs proper computer skills and shows working knowledge of patient orders, status charges and profiles.  Demonstrates the ability to organize patient care and set priorities by providing critical care first and by implementing the physician’s orders.
  • Maintains inventory to ensure proper quantity of supplies.  Monitors inventory of supplies, notifies appropriate supervisor when stock is low.
  • Assesses environment or safety hazards that could harm patient, visitors, or other hospital employees, and reports all hazards to appropriate supervisors immediately.  Screens patients, visitors and staff for MRI contradictions before exposing to magnetic field to ensure safety.
  • Assists in the instruction of student technologists to MRI scanning.
  • Performs other duties as required.  Is authorized to access and administer contrast media.

Must be a graduate of approved School of Radiologic Technology with ARRT registration and State of Illinois License.  Must receive on-going formalized educational program for maintaining MRI competency.  One year’s experience as staff technologist.  Experience in CT preferred.  Current CPR certification.

  • Able to be on call an average of seven days in four weeks with an average of five to seven call backs per week.

Required Skills

  • Repairs and Preventative Maintenance: Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on machines, mechanical equipment, and building systems, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, and other structural components, in compliance with building codes and specifications.

  • Equipment Installation: Install hospital equipment and machinery efficiently and effectively, ensuring proper operation.

  • Boiler Operations: Operate, maintain, and repair boilers and all associated equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Maintenance Triage: Triage maintenance requests, resolve minor building and repair issues, and use materials efficiently. Typical tasks include replacing faulty electrical switches, repairing air conditioning motors, and operating boilers.

  • Professional Appearance: Maintain appropriate dress and appearance, projecting a positive image of the Medical Center.

  • Safety and Cleanliness: Follow all safety procedures and policies while maintaining effective standards of cleanliness for the facility and equipment.

  • Disaster Preparedness: Be thoroughly familiar with all hospital disaster codes and respond appropriately and immediately when required.

  • Cost and Time Efficiency: Execute job functions in a cost-effective and timely manner, developing efficient work practices that optimize time and material use.

  • Engagement and Goal Support: Assist with achieving division goals and participate actively in department initiatives.

  • Customer Focus: Coordinate assigned work to meet the needs of patients, visitors, and other customers, ensuring high levels of satisfaction.

  • On-Call Participation: Participate in departmental on-call rotation as needed.

  • Other Duties: Perform additional related work as required or requested.

Required Experience

Education:

  • Associate’s degree in a mechanical or science field, a trades certificate, or completion of an apprenticeship program OR 10 years of work experience in a commercial maintenance-related field.

  • HVAC certification is strongly preferred.


Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.

  • Must be deemed an acceptable driver according to the MHS Fleet Safety Policy (five-year Motor Vehicle Record review required).


Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of commercial building maintenance or boiler systems experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other technical specifications.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and accurately record data.

  • Knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and carpentry skills.

  • Knowledge of steam boilers and standard boiler procedures.

  • Proficiency with routine hand tools used in general maintenance trades.

  • Ability to read, understand, and apply complex building codes, including NFPA and Joint Commission standards.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains the safety and security of patients at high risk for safety events.
  • Provides continuous observation and documentation for patients at risk for self-harm, elopement, or injury, as delegated by the RN. These include patients that are suicidal, high fall risk, exhibiting threatening behaviors or experiencing symptoms of dementia or confusion, etc. Under no circumstances is a patient on continuous observation to be left unattended. Visual contact at all times must be maintained.
  • Calls out for assistance and/or utilizes call light for assistance in de-escalating patient and addressing at-risk behaviors. Instructs patient to remain in bed or chair at all times until assistance arrives.
  • Observes and reports unusual conditions and/or change in patient behavior or appearance to the RN.
  • Follows safety checklists as appropriate and assists with ensuring an ongoing safe environment for a patient on continuous observation.
  • Assists with documenting adherence to safety checks as directed by the RN.
  1. Enforces adherence to infection prevention precautions for patients, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Follows hospital policies to prevent the transmission of infections.
  • Sets up patient room with appropriate signage and PPE supplies.
  • Observes donning and doffing of PPE for all personnel entering and exiting the patient room.
  • Maintain record of all colleagues entering and exiting the patient room.
  • Assures equipment is cleaned and maintained per policy between patient encounters.
  • Assists with coordinating movement of a COVID-19 positive or presumptive positive patient.

  • Abstracts data sets per standards.
  • Obtains and maintains follow-up information of all patients in registry data base.
