Required Skills

  • Follows the Scope and Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice (American Associate of Nurse Anesthetists. 
  • CRNA Scope of Practice includes but, is not limited to the following:
    • Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluation of the patient, including requested consultations and diagnostic studies; selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids; and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.
    • Developing and implementing an anesthetic plan.
    • Initiating the anesthetic technique which may include; general, regional, local and sedation.
    • Selecting applying and inserting appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for continuous evaluation for the patient’s physical status.
    • Selecting, obtaining and administering medications, fluids and ventilatory support.
    • Discharging the patient from a post-anesthesia care are and providing post-anesthesia follow-up, evaluation and care.
    • Implementing acute and chronic pain management modalities.
    • Responding to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice:
    • Standard I: Perform a thorough and complete preanesthesia assessment.
    • Standard II: Obtain informed consent for the planned anesthetic intervention from the patient or legal guardian.
    • Standard III: Formulate a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care.
    • Standard IV: Implement and adjust the anesthesia care plan based on the patients physiological response
    • Standard V: Monitor the patient’s physiologic condition as appropriate for the type of anesthesia and specific patient needs. 
    • Standard VI: There shall be complete, accurate and timely documentation of pertinent information on the patient’s medical record.
    • Standard VII: Transfer the responsibility of care and patient safety.
    • Standard VIII: Adhere to appropriate safety precautions, as established within the institution, to minimize the risks for fire, explosion, electrical shock and equipment malfunction.  Document on the patient’s medical record that the anesthesia machine and equipment were checked.
    • Standard IX: Precautions shall be taken to minimize the risk of infection to the patient, the CRNA, and other healthcare providers. 
    • Standard X: Anesthesia care shall be assessed to assure its quality and contribution to positive patient outcomes. 
    • Standard XI: The CRNA shall respect and maintain the basic rights of patient.
  • Identifies and manages emergency and obstetrical care.
    • Recognizes abnormal patient responses and implements corrective action.
    • Responds to requests for resuscitation within the Hospital within a timely manner.
  • Provides an accurate and legible record of all patient information, including billing data.
  • Participates on committees and in program and departmental activities.
  • Coordinates and plans the clinical experience for student registered nurse anesthesia interns (RNAI’s).
  • Participates in education of RNAI’s; documents intern performance.
  • Maintains certification/recertification and licensure.  Attends Clinical Case Conferences as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

Education and/or Other Requirements

Maintains current certification as CRNA.  Masters degree preferred.  New graduates must be certified as soon as possible.

Must possess visual acuity to meet visual demands in charting, intubating and operating equipment.

Facilitates the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based comprehensive care to patients.  Collaboration and referral to other health care providers, patient advocacy, teaching, and family counseling are major components of the role.  Under the direction physician or designee, provides coordination of their respective department or work area.

Required Skills

  1. In collaboration with supervising physician(s), practices within professional scope and current standards to assess, diagnose, and treat patients.
  1. Follows protocols according to supervising physician’s direction, which includes encouraging the patient to follow up with their primary care physician accordingly. Partners with the physician(s) to promote effective patient care. Provides to physician visit documentation and associated testing for review and signature. Effectively communicates with physician when needing clarification when deviating from protocol and prior to ordering costly tests, treatments, or referrals.
  1. Completes thorough and timely documentation according to standards put forth by Medicare, Medicaid, and other relevant payer sources, as well as MHS policies pertaining to medical records.
  1. Coordinates the resources required by the patient.
  1. Collaborates, as needed, with other health care professionals, patient advocates, teachers, and family counselors in the formulation and initiation of a health care plan for patients. Routinely evaluates the plan and modifies the plan to improve outcomes.
  1. Assumes responsibility for the development, implementation, and evaluation of plans for adherence to evidence-based quality indicators.
  1. Serves as a clinical consultant to other healthcare professionals.
  1. Reviews and utilizes current literature and research findings relevant to the health care of patients and their families.
  1. Assists with implementing research findings and monitoring the impact on patient care outcomes.
  1. Utilizes available data to analyze performance and develop plans to improve outcomes.
  1. Works to further establish advanced clinical expertise and skills with regards to their specialty area.
  1. Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities specific to their specialty area.
  1. Maintains an active role in community and professional programs.
  1. Assists in meeting financial goals related to revenue and expense. Maintains productivity according to budget. Communicates when expected volumes are not met or when opportunities exist to improve productivity or decrease cost.
  1. Assists in meeting customer service goals by delivering care in a manner consistent with a high level of patient satisfaction. Reviews survey results and looks for ways to improve.
  1. Demonstrates support for and participates in accomplishing team goals and objectives.
  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.

Required Experience

Requirements:

  1. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner required or FNP as determined by the department.
  2. Must possess and maintain licensing as required by Illinois State law for APN.
  3. Minimum of 1 year post-graduate school experience as an APN preferred.
  4. Valid CPR required. ACLS certification where required.
  5. Maintains DEA license where required.
