The Main Operationg Room Surgical Technologist performs “scrub” technologist duties for scheduled surgeries in the Main Operating Room, and assists with the draping and utilization of instruments for a particular surgery and age of the patient serviced. Demonstrates knowledge in the basic principles of sterile technique and sterilization procedures. Clinical ladder advancement opportunities available.

Required Skills
1. Performs duties in capacity of “scrub” technologist as prescribed by hospital policies and procedures. Illustrative tasks and expectations include, but are not limited to:
• Prepare and organize supplies and materials prior to start of case with respect to procedure and surgeon.
• Scrub, gown, and glove in accordance with procedure.
• Set up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of procedure.
• Assist in the pre-operative sterile draping of operative area according to need.
• Assist surgeon and assistant to gown and glove.
• Anticipate needs of surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique, procedure, and special requirements.
• Maintain aseptic technique at all times and report discrepancies immediately.
• Practice conservation in utilization of and requests for supplies.
• Handles floor stock medications or medications delivered from pharmacy directly or through the pneumatic tube station. Relocate these medications, in original containers, to designated secure storage locations or delivers directly to appropriate licensed staff.
• Maintain correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments with circulating nurse; immediately report any discrepancy.
• Assist in removal of drapes and preparation of patient for transport from OR.
• Proceed in end-of-case cleanup of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Following case, begin preparation for next assignment.
2. B. Assists in maintenance of a safe environment for patients and staff. Illustrative tasks and expectations include, but are not limited to:
• Check rooms, materials, and equipment for proper care and handling.
• Assure a clean, safe environment through continuous alertness to safety, explosion hazards, and aseptic technique.
• Assist in the control of traffic through the department.
• Follow standard precautions when handling items contaminated with blood and body fluids.
3. Assists in the orderly functioning of the OR.
• Conform to the dress regulations of the department.
• Proceed on breaks and lunch as directed and do not waste time.
• Provide relief for fellow employees as directed.
• Report to supervisor for further assignment; i.e., special assignments, utility room, etc.
• Proceed on assignment as directed and assist others when own assignment is completed.
• Remain available for “on call” and shift rotations, if so assigned.
• Follow hospital/unit policies, procedures, disaster plans, and performance expectations.

Required Experience
Education:
- Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program and/or have previous Surgical Technologist experience REQUIRED.
- Completion of Anatomy and Physiology classes preferred.
- High School graduate or equivalent required.
- Attends JCAHO, OSHA, and hospital/nurse manager-specified mandatory in-services.
- Obtains four contact hours in area of interest
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
- Maintains current CPR certification
- Surgical Technologist Certification preferred
Experience:
- Previous experience in multiple surgical specialties is preferred.
