Under the general supervision of the laboratory manager, the phlebotomist assumes the responsibility for performing venipuncture and related procedures under the philosophy, policies, and procedures established by the hospital and department. Additionally provides patient access and clerical assistance necessary to maintain the efficient productive operation of the laboratory.  Embodies the Memorial Health System Performance Excellence Standards of Safety, Courtesy, Quality, and Efficiency that support our mission, vision and values.

Required Skills

  1. Perform all phlebotomy duties (venipunctures, dermal punctures, arterial punctures, etc.) under a variety of patient conditions.
  2. Collect non-blood specimens (urine, throat swabs, nasal/nasopharyngeal swabs, urine drug screen collection, breath alcohol testing) on outpatients.
  3. Instruct patients on collecting non-blood specimens (stool specimens, 24 hour urine collection).
  4. Process specimens with high attention to detail.

  1. Distribute blood and other specimens to properly laboratory sections for testing after collection and receiving information is entered into CPSI.
  2. Perform CPSI and 4Medica computer terminal operator responsibilities such as Order Entry, Result Inquiry, and ICD-10 coding for Medical Necessity and reimbursement.
  3. Greet visitors and patients; answer patient questions (via telephone/ in person) and provide directional information as requested.
  4. Complete all steps of registration when necessary, including patient interview, obtaining of signatures for consents, and distributes required patient information.
  5. Verify medical necessity for Medicare patients and completes appropriate ABN when indicated. Perform Insurance Eligibility checks as indicated.
  6. Participate in orientation and training of personnel as directed by lab manager or other authorized personnel.
  7. Distribute mail and process paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
  8. Receive and organize requests for blood collection from nursing homes, reference lab clients, inpatients and physician offices for outpatients.
  9. Keep phlebotomy area and phlebotomy trays clean and stocked for future use.
  10. Use communication boards for follow-through on procedures from previous shifts.
  11. Maintain supplies and order as necessary.
  12. Keep files in an accurate and orderly condition.
  13. Use time between tests to departmental advantage by putting away supplies, performing general housekeeping duties, or performing other duties as necessary.
  14. Performs other related work as required or requested.

Required Experience

Education:

High school graduate or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), EMT-B, or one year of phlebotomy experience preferred, preferably in a                            hospital setting.

Experience:

Experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Participation in on call rotation required.
  • Must be able to get to offsite client locations for specimen pickup or collection during normal working hours and when on call.
  • Excellent communication skills coupled with strong customer relations skills.
