The Emergency Department Charge Nurse/Unit Coordinator is a leader, mentor and a staff/customer advocate. This individual possesses the skills to identify, introduce and assimilate change successfully into the practice environment through and with staff. The Charge Nurse provides effective professional direction to facilitate staff satisfaction and optimal nursing outcomes.

Required Skills
- Performs audits and chart review for identified nursing sensitive indicators and assist manager with planning, education and implementation of process improvements.
- Performs chart audits to assure accurate ED level charges are completed for each visit.
- Works with unit manager to ensure the unit is in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Assists the manager with review of policy and procedures
- Coordinates unit-specific orientation of new employees.
- Facilitates staff participation in development of unit goals.
- Represents the Emergency Department at specific committees as assigned.
- Represents the Emergency Department at specific committees as assigned.
- Serves as coach and mentor to staff in clinical roles.
- Maintains clinical excellence by participating in patient care and serve as staff nurse when needed.
- Facilitates staff education and participation at hospital events.
- Demonstrates ability to foster team work within the department as well as across departments.
- Provides input into employee evaluations.
- Assists the manager in preparation of unit budget by providing input into needed supplies and equipment.
- Works to promote EMS and department readiness for Emergency Management Plans.
- Works with manager to develop plans to address staff concerns identified by the Employee Opinion Survey.
- Implements and supports changes to foster Customer Service Initiatives.
- Completes daily assignments by assuring adequate department staffing, by working with house supervisors and nurse managers.
- Works with manager to ensure that pertinent information is shared with all staff.
- Performs role of Triage nurse for the Emergency Department.
- Works closely with manager, staff and physicians to identify opportunities to improve and facilitate patient throughput.
- Performs patient rounds to assure patients are kept current on their plan of care and anticipated delays.
- Performs other related work as required or requested.

Required Experience
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
- Current RN license in the State of Illinois required. BSN preferred.
- Healthcare Provider or Instructor BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- PALS (provider or instructor) or ENPC, and TNCC, ATLS or TNS certifications preferred within 6 months, and required within 1 year of hire date.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years experience in emergency department required.
- Leadership experience preferred.
