  • Maintains flexibility, organizes and prioritizes time to accommodate assigned patient load.

    • Suggests changes in patients’ clinical approaches, and secures orders as appropriate.
    • Communicates and collaborates with rehabilitation team.
    • Maintains existing equipment and recommends purchase of new items as consistent with Hospital and Department Strategic Plan.
  • Maintains current professional knowledge.
  • Attends all mandatory educational programs and continuous education required for licensure.
  • Seeks continuing education to improve quality of care.
  • Compliant and accurate implementation of billing process.
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility of the Department and the Hospital.
  • Actively looks for ways to reduce costs.
  • Maintains patient/family confidentiality to comply with HIPPA regulations.
  • Provides in-services and public education functions.
  • Supervises students, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and aides.
  • Serves on committees as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director, Managers, and Team Leader.
  • Recommends and implements new programs as directed and as they pertain to Hospital and Department Strategic Plan.

Required Experience

Education and/or Other Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy or entry level equivalent.  Licensed or license pending in the State of Illinois without previous disciplinary action in Illinois or other states.  Current CPR card.

Assesses patient’s condition and response to respiratory therapy by checking patient’s pulse, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, cough, sputum, breath sounds, and other pertinent data that relates to the patient. Must also be alert to adverse reactions of patient during treatment, plus be aware of proper response to emergencies.
  6. Recognizes and responds to the signs of cardiopulmonary arrest and/or failure and life threatening arrhythmias seen on EKG’s. As necessary, assists in performing and/or initiating CPR procedures.
  7. Modifies therapy in accordance with respiratory care order set in cases of adverse or ineffective patient response and reports changes to shift supervisor.
  8. Records procedures, patient responses, and medication administration in accordance with departmental documentation requirements. Relays same information orally or in writing to management and/or other therapist(s) as shift changes occurs.
  9. Participates in in-services, continuing education, and other staff development activities to develop and maintain necessary competencies.
  10. Maintains the security and confidentiality of all patient records and information.
  11. Evaluates and ensures the accuracy of ABG reports and informs the proper physician, nurse, and/or therapist of abnormal results.
  12. Performs arterial punctures using approved criteria and maintains competency through annual review. Can also analyze ABG’s via GEM Premier.
  13. May perform endotracheal intubations using approved criteria and maintains competency through annual review.
  14. Maintains, monitors, and provides respiratory care to patients on continuous mechanical ventilation.
  15. Provides respiratory care to ICU (including lung auscultation); recommends or obtains ABG samples, x-rays, O2, and other respiratory care procedures as patient condition warrants. Alerts the appropriate staff of any changes in patient condition.
  16. Monitors and cares for patients with artificial airways and endotracheal tubes.
  17. Instructs patients, families, and other hospital personnel in the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and the associates of procedures and techniques used.
  18. Provides pulmonary services in the emergency department. Performs patient assessment and treatment according to the emergency department /respiratory care protocol.
  19. Makes recommendations for changes and improvements in hospital equipment and procedures to maintain best practice.
  20. Participates in departmental or multi-disciplinary teams related to clinical quality, safety education, best practice, patient satisfaction, or process improvements.
  21. Collaborates and shares clinical information with the multi-disciplinary health team to achieve evidence based care and outcomes.
  22. Serves as a back-up for other areas within the unit or department, especially during times of special needs or staff absences.
  23. Performs other related work as required or requested.

  • Implements weaning procedures from continuous mechanical ventilations and monitors patients during this procedure.
  • Alerts therapist, supervisor, RN, and Physician or Medical Director to any changes in the cardiopulmonary status of patients in the ICU or any other critically ill patient of any age.
  • Monitors endotracheal cuffs on patients of all ages with artificial airways; assists in airway care as indicated.
  • Assists in clinical instruction of RT students.
  • Auscultates lungs of patients in ICU and reports findings to proper RN, therapist, or physician.
  • Instructs patients, families, and other MMC personnel in the proper care of RT procedures and techniques.
  • May assist physician in performing bronchoscopy, certified by medical director. Maintains all supplies, monitors patients, obtains cultures and cytology samples and sterilizes equipment.  Participates in conscious sedation procedures and patient monitoring.

Education and/or Other Requirements

Successful completion of an AMA accredited respiratory therapy program.

Current registration or eligibility for licensure with the State of Illinois for practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.   

RRT credential awarded by the NBRC. 

Current CPR card.

  1. Minimum cleaning and maintenance of R.T. equipment.
  1. Prepares and tests R.T. equipment for proper and safe operation and periodically checks R.T. equipment in use and on units for proper operation and routine service. Reports malfunctioning equipment to manager.
  1. Follows and enforces safety rules of the R.T. Department and hospital following special instructions, such as isolation precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
  1. Receives, verifies, and processes all necessary documentation for correct order.
  1. Documents patient oxygen use for charging purposes by visual inspection of every patient care unit bed.
  2. Changes humidifiers and aerosol generators according to department policy.
  1. Performs emergency rounds according to department policy.
  1. Distributes E-cylinders of oxygen to the designated gas stations within MMC.
  2. Receives and documents orders from physicians relating to Respiratory Care Order Set. Also reads and evaluates physician orders and charts that pertain to respiratory care and is aware of contraindication to medications, treatments, and related hazards with their use.
  1. Measures and administers prescribed medications to patients (oxygen & aerosolized medications, etc.). Also administers the following therapy:  EZPAP, humidity and aerosols, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry, BiPAP and CPAP administration and bedside pulmonary function/mechanics.
  1. Assesses patients’ conditions and response to respiratory therapy by checking patients pulse, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, cough, sputum, breath sounds, and other pertinent data that relates to the patient. Must also be alert to adverse reactions of patient during treatment, plus be aware of proper response to emergencies.
  1. Recognizes signs of cardiopulmonary arrest and/or failure and assists in performing CPR procedures. Also must be able to recognize life-threatening arrhythmias or EKG strips.
  1. Modifies therapy to deal with adverse or ineffective patient response and reports changes to shift supervisor.
  1. Records procedures and patient response in appropriate electronic documentation, departmental paperwork, medication administration records, interdisciplinary plan of care and education record and requisitions. Completes both written and oral reports on patients and relays information to oncoming therapists.
  1. Participates in in-services, continuing education, and other staff development activities.
  1. Performs CPR procedures as part of the Stat Code Team.
  1. Keeps confidential all patient information received and follows MMC Guest Relations guidelines.
  1. Follows MMC and Pulmonary Medicine infection control policies
  1. Performs all duties under supervision of Certified Respiratory Therapist, Registered Respiratory Therapist, or shift supervisor.

  1. Participates in scheduling of diagnostic/consultative/educational activities for Sleep Disorder Center patients as approved by the Manager of Pulmonary Lab/Sleep Disorders Center.

Required Experience

Education:

  • High school education or equivalent required with an associates / bachelors in applied science, polysomnography, or respiratory therapy preferred.
  • All staff must participate in an average of 10 hours per year, AMA PRA Category I CME or CEU sleep or related educational activities with a minimum of 30 per three calendar years.
  • Must enroll in or have completed the A-Step Online Self Studies within 12 months of hire.
  • OR Must be enrolled in or have completed training in polysomnography in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with the polysomnography option.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Respiratory Care Practitioner (CRT, RRT, CPFT, RPFT), registered nurse or licensed practice nurse (RN, LPN) with current Illinois license. 

OR Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography OR successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state license and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a polysomnographic technologist. 

  • Registry completion preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Experience:

1-3 years experience preferred but not required.
