Essential Functions and Job Duties
- Registers patients, enters test orders, cancels, credits, charges, and merges according to physicians’ orders or established laboratory procedures.
- Registers, orders and delivers specimens brought in to department.
- Maintains equipment and work area in a safe, sanitary and well-stocked condition; performs other assigned duties.
- Performs storeroom duties.
- Greets, informs, and directs visitors; answers inquiries concerning laboratory services for patients and families.
- Prints and ascertains that reports are sent as needed.
- Performs follow-up duties.
- Sorts, files and/or routes reports and messages.
- Maintains files, procedures and logs.
- Assists in training new or less-skilled personnel; participates in continuing education.
- Communicates and interacts well with co-workers.

- Contacts outside providers with critical values and questions about out-patient orders.
- Explains to patients how to collect samples. Provides containers and instructions to patients.
- Tracks and follows up on incomplete and verbal orders.
- Contacts phlebotomists on the floor about stat draw requests when Phlebotomy Manager is busy.
- Complete laboratory work queues.

- High school graduate or equivalent.

Physical Demands

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and move through an office environment.
- Must be willing to work other schedules if needed. Moderate physical exertion, including continuous (70% to 100%) walking, standing, bending, and reaching and frequent lifting of average loads (six to 25 pounds). Mobility to delivery patient reports to the Physicians’ Plaza office buildings is essential.

Position Summary
Registers, orders, labels specimens with appropriate barcode labels and receives all lab specimens arriving at MMC Lab for both inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services. Evaluates specimen received verses testing ordered and confirms specimen collection was accurate and specimens are labeled with appropriate patient identifiers. Recognizes critical “stat” specimens compared to routine testing. Understands all aspects of lab safety regarding specimen handling and processing. Required Skills
- Interprets, orders, and generates barcode labels from the Lab LIS system and applies labels to appropriate specimen tubes and collection containers. Must be able to interpret many different physician orders and requests to include over 1800 lab tests and select the appropriate orderable code in the Lab LIS system.
- Removes biological specimens from biohazard bags including blood, urine, bone marrow, body fluids, and tissue specimens. Understand all different types of collection media, preservatives, and risks of exposure to infectious agents. Handles both infectious A and B substances with appropriate CDC, and IDPH guidelines. Ability to determine if specimen was collected in appropriate collection container and media. Understands steps to resolve collection issues to ensure patient testing is performed or recollected.
- Receives all calls arriving in the laboratory from providers, clients, nurses, management, and patients. Logs calls in tracking software, answers all questions pertaining to phlebotomy draws, specimen collection, transport of specimens, provides lab results, supply requests, forensic autopsy cases, and administrative questions. Escalates callers to management or technical departments when necessary if unable to resolve all question
- Correctly enters outpatient and non-patient demographic, insurance, and diagnosis information into the hospital registration system, answering all questions in each field and updating any information that is not current. Understands insurance policy numbers and carrier codes including client account versus patient insurance billing. Recognizes valid diagnosis codes and follows appropriate resolution on any noncompliant codes.

- Monitors the printing of physician reports for inpatients and outpatients. Separates lab reports for delivery to the correct ordering provider or client site to ensure providers receive lab results in a timely manner.
- Communicates requests for specimen collection to phlebotomists in a timely and appropriate manner. Works closely with phlebotomy staff and managers to organize and facilitate inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy requests.
- Inputs all faxed orders into the lab orders database, questioning any illegible order, calls physician’s office with clarification of test order and patient demographics and order request (standing or one time). Follows all instructions on provider order including, add on testing and testing cancelations. Understands how to handle a verbal order request from a provider and documents correctly.
- Schedules all fine needle aspirates and biopsies as requested by clinicians, ensures a pathologist is dispatched when clinician is ready to perform procedure.
- Processes all slide and block requests for internal and external consultations, including preparing appropriate paperwork, requesting material, pathologist review and sign off, shipping, and material returns.
- Assists with the preparation of slides and blocks for sendout testing.
- Contribute to departmental operations by performing other related duties as may be required and/or assigned.
Required Experience

- Strong organizational skills.

Required Skills
- Performs and results waived point-of-care testing such as urine pregnancies, urine dipsticks, rapid strep screens, RSV, influenza, and Hem occult testing.
- Correctly enter patient demographic and billing information into the hospital admitting system. Understands insurance policy numbers and carrier codes. Verifies diagnosis with test order for Medicare reimbursement. Prints the ABN and obtains necessary patient information on required situations. Provides accurate communication to assist outpatients in the Medicare process.
- Accurately identify and obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages, employees, etc. as requested by authorized personnel (i.e. physicians, nurses, residents) using correct technique and appropriate equipment. Maintains productivity at a rate comparable to other experienced staff (6-8 patients per hour).
- Reads, interprets and correctly enters outpatient and non-patient physician orders, questioning any unclear order with supervisor. Rechecks the order for errors, making any necessary corrections. Performs cancellations requested by authorized personnel using proper documentation.
- Participates in the collection of special procedures (ISP, drug screens, EBT, cultures, Influenza/RSV’s, research studies, bone marrows, capillary collections, therapeutic phlebotomy, cortisol stimulation testing, etc.). Assist non-laboratory personnel with specimen requirements and collection procedures.
- Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to appropriate laboratory packaging protocols. Ensures that all specimens received from client and physician offices are documented against packing lists and follows up with the site in the event all specimens are not received. Completes tracking logs and prepares specimens for courier pick up.
- Monitors daily phlebotomy actions by the use of various computer programs and logs (ORV, collection list, will call board, etc.). Maintains specimen tracking by correctly logging in all specimens with the correct time and date of specimen collection.
- Maintains Phlebotomy and clerical areas in a clean and orderly manner. Order and maintain supplies and keep areas stocked accordingly.Inputs all faxed orders into the lab orders database, questioning any illegible order, calls physician’s office with clarification of test order and patient demographics and order request (standing or one time).
- Communicates telephone or verbal messages effectively to appropriate lab divisions, personnel or administrative staff. Provides effective communication to the outpatient either in person or by telephone. Gives patient test results to nursing units and physician offices in accordance with medical center policies either verbally or by fax communication.Performs other related work as required or requested.

Required Skills
- Perform waived, moderate, and highly complex analytic processes (for which competency has been validated) in each section of the laboratory including limited Microbiology. This includes the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of such testing according to laboratory and national standards.

Position Summary
Performs microscopic evaluation of prepared cytologic specimens from patients of all ages. Provides technical support for the cytology laboratory by managing all aspects of the cytology specimen workflow including receipt, accessioning, processing, staining, cover-glass mounting, laboratory information system (LIS) resulting and reporting. Performs cytologic-based molecular testing (HPV) including result integration into the cytology report. Performs or supports fine-needle aspiration and core biopsy adequacy procedures. Additional supporting responsibilities include telephone/fax communication, slide transport and filing, reagent manufacture, routine equipment maintenance/calibration, quality control and quality assurance.

Required Skills
- Performs initial cytological evaluation of gynecological (SurePath and conventional) specimens.
- Performs initial cytological evaluation of non-gynecological specimen preparations including fine needle aspirations and special stains.
- Results and reports (when appropriate) cytologic specimen findings into LIS.
- Performs cytology-based molecular pathology testing (HPV).
- Integrates cytology-based molecular test (HPV) results into the cytology report.
- Performs quality control evaluation of specimens and stains in the cytopreparatory area providing processing guidance to the cytopreparatory technologist on a rotational basis.
- Assumes the duties of the cytopreparatory technologist when necessary.
- Provides secretarial support (when needed).
- Technologists not on FNA-Biopsy Team will support FNA-Biopsy Team in performing fine-needle aspiration/biopsy adequacy procedures.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Performs or supports cytopathologist on FNA/core biopsy adequacy procedures on a weekly rotational basis.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Collects specimens for additional studies during FNA/BX procedures.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Maintains all competencies and education related to FNA/BX procedures, including telecytopathology.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Accessions, stains, and performs initial cytologic evaluation on all cases performed during an FNA adequacy procedure.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Maintains all stains, materials and FNA carts utilized during FNA procedures.
- FNA-Biopsy Team: Updates and maintains all databases and logs related to FNA/BX specimen workflow and quality assurance.
- Follows established standards and practices set-forth in related safety, operation and procedure manuals for all associated federal, state and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintains and stays current on all related and assigned competencies and computer-based learning (CBL) modules.
- Promotes an attitude of teamwork and effective communication and rapport with management and staff of Memorial Laboratory Services, Memorial Medical Center and Memorial Health Systems including its affiliates.
- Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding patients according to hospital policy and federal HIPAA regulations.

Required Experience
Education:
Baccalaureate degree in Cytotechnology or science related degree with successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited Cytotechnology program.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
- A valid CT(ASCP) certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) is required. A SCT(ASCP) certification is suggested for FNA/core biopsy adequacy performance.
- In order to perform rapid on site evaluation of FNA/core needle biopsies, cytotechnologists will be required to pass all tests and competencies established by the cytopathology technical director for the selected procedures.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer skills, preferably with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Moderate physical effort.

Position Summary
Collects blood/urine/swabs specimens from patients of all ages and processes specimens appropriately for delivery to testing department. Performs and results a variety of waived point-of-care testing including quality control. Interprets and inputs all laboratory orders into computer system for outpatient testing. Determines medical necessity and interprets orders that have a diagnosis that does not support the testing ordered.

Required Skills
- Performs and results waived point-of-care testing such as urine pregnancies, urine dipsticks, rapid strep screens, RSV, influenza, and Hem occult testing.
- Correctly enter patient demographic and billing information into the hospital admitting system. Understands insurance policy numbers and carrier codes. Verifies diagnosis with test order for Medicare reimbursement. Prints the ABN and obtains necessary patient information on required situations. Provides accurate communication to assist outpatients in the Medicare process.
- Accurately identify and obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages, employees, etc. as requested by authorized personnel (i.e. physicians, nurses, residents) using correct technique and appropriate equipment. Maintains productivity at a rate comparable to other experienced staff (6-8 patients per hour).
- Reads, interprets and correctly enters outpatient and non-patient physician orders, questioning any unclear order with supervisor. Rechecks the order for errors, making any necessary corrections. Performs cancellations requested by authorized personnel using proper documentation.
- Participates in the collection of special procedures (ISP, drug screens, EBT, cultures, Influenza/RSV’s, research studies, bone marrows, capillary collections, therapeutic phlebotomy, cortisol stimulation testing, etc.). Assist non-laboratory personnel with specimen requirements and collection procedures.
- Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to appropriate laboratory packaging protocols. Ensures that all specimens received from client and physician offices are documented against packing lists and follows up with the site in the event all specimens are not received. Completes tracking logs and prepares specimens for courier pick up.
- Monitors daily phlebotomy actions by the use of various computer programs and logs (ORV, collection list, will call board, etc.). Maintains specimen tracking by correctly logging in all specimens with the correct time and date of specimen collection.
- Maintains Phlebotomy and clerical areas in a clean and orderly manner. Order and maintain supplies and keep areas stocked accordingly.Inputs all faxed orders into the lab orders database, questioning any illegible order, calls physician’s office with clarification of test order and patient demographics and order request (standing or one time).
- Communicates telephone or verbal messages effectively to appropriate lab divisions, personnel or administrative staff. Provides effective communication to the outpatient either in person or by telephone. Gives patient test results to nursing units and physician offices in accordance with medical center policies either verbally or by fax communication.Performs other related work as required or requested.
