Required Experience

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

• Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) registration or equivalent certification required.

Experience:

• Greater than one year experience as a medical laboratory scientist working in a high volume – high complexity laboratory required.
• Proven experience in interpretation and evaluation of laboratory testing, including problem resolution as well as clinical application.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Effective trouble shooting skills for both ongoing instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting functions to assure effective equipment performance.
• Light to moderate physical effort.

Responsibilites:

• Performs various laboratory tests, evaluates data, correlate results with pathologic and physiologic states and patient therapy to determine validity and reasonableness of data.

• Evaluate and calculates quality control statistics to assess accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory methods.

• Performs analytical and decision-making functions without direct supervision, recognizes unexpected results, and take necessary corrective action.
• Provides technical and analytic interpretive skills for Medical Laboratory Scientist I and supports educational activities for the Medical Laboratory Scientist I and peers in these skills.

• Integrates and relates laboratory data generated by various sections in making judgments regarding possible discrepancies.

• Assists in the preparation and presentation of teaching materials for the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.

• Performs preventative and most corrective maintenance and repairs on sophisticated and often computerized laboratory equipment. Calibrates laboratory instruments to assure accuracy.

• Participates in the collection of specimens and samples from patients.

• Demonstrates knowledge and theory behind instrumentation. Diagnoses laboratory instrument malfunctions, and decides when back-up methods must be initiated. Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas and performs all technical procedures.

• May be asked to assist with evaluation and/or development of new test procedures, monitors them for unexpected problems or sources of error.

• May be asked to assist in researching, reviewing and writing of technical procedures.

• Collects and controls laboratory specimens.

• Assures the quality and timeliness of patient results by assisting with investigation of any problems involving specimen collection, results reporting and turn-around times.

• Recognizes unexpected results, errors and problems with patient test. Identifies the technical, instrument or physiologic cause, such as patient variable or interfering substances.

• Maintains and communicates department records of tests performed, test results and equipment maintenance.

• Maintains 12 hours of continuing education per year, and cross-training in a minimum of two diverse technical areas.

• Must be capable of performing in a variety of laboratory divisions.

• Maintains confidentiality of information regarding all patient testing/results as detailed in hospital policies.

• Conserves hospital resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to perform job duties.

• Assure compliance with all local, state, federal and national regulatory agencies and organizations.

• Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.

• Performs various laboratory tests, evaluates data, verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.

• Obtains blood and other body fluids from inpatients/outpatients of all ages, employees etc. as requested by authorized personnel.

• Operates hospital computer system acquiring necessary patient information to enter, delete or credit the patient’s accounts.

• Perform preventative maintenance and follows equipment manufacturers troubleshooting guide to solve instrument problems.

Required Experience

Education: – High School graduate or equivalent required. – Completion of a phlebotomy course, preferred.   Licensure/Certification/Registry: – Certification for breath alcohol testing and drug screening, preferred. – Valid CPR certification by end of first week of employment required Experience: – Previous computer experience required   Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: – Previous phlebotomy skills for collection of samples on all types and ages of patients preferred. Candidates must successfully pass the following assessments during the interview process in order to be further considered for this position:  Listening Skills and Data Entry.

Required Experience

Education:

• Minimum of 60 semester hours of college level coursework or Associate’s degree (preferably in Life Science or related field) with 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry coursework required (must be combination of both subjects, but not required to be equal parts).  Bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hour requirement fulfilled is preferred.

• Basic laboratory skills required.
  

Responsibilities:

• Under general supervision performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist. Activities may include specimen accessioning, grossing, frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy and routine and specialized staining.
• Utilize LIS system and other computer systems necessary to perform duties.
• Sort and assign cases to pathologists.
• Operate, clean and maintain all histology equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures. Document remedial actions such as repairs and repeated tests.
• Prepare solutions and reagents for manual and automated stain processes.
• File blocks and slides according to department procedures.
• Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
• Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
• May participate in department on call and weekend rotation schedules as deemed appropriate by the Histology Supervisor.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
